First issued in 1987 by The Royal Mint as Britain's answer to the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf. Originally a 22-karat coin alongside the Sovereign, it was upgraded to 99.99% pure gold in 2013. Coins from 2021 onward feature an industry-first set of security elements baked into the design: a latent image, micro-text, surface animation, and tincture lines.
